We love all our chandeliers, but the Urchin Chandelier design is special. It is part of what started Dutton Brown. Its design is inspired by Jean de Merry's Lumiere chandelier. The Jean de Merry piece is gorgeous, but its beauty comes at price. The fixture is also quite large and would be a behemoth in most spaces. We set out to create a more structured, obtainable design more appropriate for smaller spaces.
Our first prototype was a spiky tire-sized piece crafted from clothes hanger wire and a hand-drilled wooden core. Hung from a blood red fabric cord, the core was drilled with enough space to snake electrical wire to one of three candelabra base sockets. We created a flat round shape we knew would work well even for 8ft ceilings. After observing its silhouette, we thought the fixture looked like a sea urchin, and thus our "urchin" chandelier was born.
After posting the first urchin on Etsy, we sold the fixture within 24 hours. It was this initial success that would drive us to create five sizes and four finishes of the fixture. We eventually also offer this ceiling light as a flush mount and pendant for all sizes and finishes. Many such fixtures like it have followed such as the Arteriors Zanadoo or Pottery Barn Explosion Chandelier. No fixtures yet have offered the price point and personalization options posited by our company.
