Read on below to learn more about us.
Because every person and space is unique, we are developing a system of customizing lighting by size, hanging height, finish, and color. We're constantly working to develop designs to give you more options. You choose a design and options you like, and we assemble and ship the fixture to you from Minneapolis within 2 weeks.
We are commited to building quality lighting, and we work each day to ensure our parts and light fixtures last a long time. Our designs are constructed from high-gauge solid brass and steel that has been galvanized, lacquered, or powder-coated to help ensure a lasting finish. Also, each fixture is twice tested and packaged with care to ensure it arrives in good condition.
An LGBTQ-owned business, Dutton Brown was created by Zach Dutton, a former designer for West Elm, and Thomas Brown, a former consumer products engineer. Partners since 2005, Dutton and Brown had grown weary of the corporate 9-to-5 lifestyle, and as a hobby, were spending weekends making home décor for their home. Encouraged by friends and family, in 2013, the two combined their design know-how to develop their first chandelier.
Inspired by Jean de Merry's Lumiere chandelier, Dutton and Brown prototyped their first light fixture from wire hanger wire and a handful of lighting parts. Pleased with the final product, the two dubbed the spiky fixture as the “urchin” chandelier and offered it for sale online. The first sold within 24 hours. Then 12 more sold that month. This success revealed they were onto something bigger.
Dutton and Brown quit their jobs to go full-time designing lighting. They packed up and moved to from Atlanta to Minnesota where Dutton Brown Design, LLC, was born in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis. The two worked from home hand-crafting options and selling them online. By 2014, they moved into their first shop space to grow the business. Since then, they've twice-upgraded to larger facilities to expand their capabilities and meet higher demand with the goal of expanding the company as a personalizable lighting and home decor company.
Dutton Brown has since grown to offer 1000's of combinations of color and finish options for personalizing both lighting and hardware alike. All products are made-to-order by skilled craftspeople within a beautiful manufacturing facility with showroom for showcasing their work. Also, while the majority of Dutton Brown products are available for sale online, in 2019, Dutton Brown partnered with Room & Board to design and manufacture exclusive collections of new lighting products.
Today, at Dutton Brown, we are working to expand with a heavy focus on creating superior value for our customers with quality products made in the USA by a team committed to customer satisfaction. We maintain a dedicated customer service presence to help guide our customers through every step of the process from planning to purchasing to installation. While we would love the chance to create products for all potential customers, we feel it is most important that the people that come to us have what is best for their space.
